 CHAPTER ONE
  INTRODUCTION

Background of the study
The PTS as a Branch has the mandate to organize activities that will promote the teaching/learning of Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) Education in Nigeria. The Branch also looks for opportunities for Nigerian students at both basic and secondary education levels to participate in other local science fairs and international Olympiads.

Serving as the National Secretariat for the JETS Clubs  and coordinating  the JETS Clubs activities nationwide;

Organizing the annual competition amongst the various schools JETS Clubs across the 36 States of the Federation and FCT, Abuja

Enlightening the entire citizenry on the importance of STM by transmitting recorded episodes of JETS activities over the National Network programs  of NTA/FRCN as well as the State radio and television stations

Cooperation with other Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Research Institutes like FMST, RMRDC, etc. in the area of popularizing Science and Technology amongst the Nigerian Youths

Participating in the annual Science and Technology Week organized by FMST to display JETS winning projects for entrepreneurs and industrialists for patenting  and commercialization purposes

The Initiative distributed Science and Mathematics Kits, to 10 Primary and 10 Secondary Schools in the 36 States and Federal Capital Territory at the pilot phase (2005 – 2009).  The project also built the capacity of teachers in Effective Learning Techniques (ELT) of Science, Technology and Mathematics.  The capacity of Inspectors was built using the developed instrument. Capacity of teachers in the effective use of the Science and Mathematics kit was also enhanced.
