But unfortunately Education in Nigeria is bio-selected with myriads of problems. These include poor funding and thus poor educational infrastructures, inadequate classroom, teaching aids (projectors, computers, laboratories and libraries) paucity of quality teachers and poor/polluted learning environment. In addition to those inadequacies our school system is played with numerous social vices such as examination malpractices, cultism, hooliganism and corruption for meaningful development to take place in the educational sector. The current monistic approach to knowledge acquisition must be changed. Technical education and innovation adaptation centers must be encourage and well funded. If this nation must move out of this present technological and scientific dependence. Government and the organized private sector must as well fund research programmes inventors an mass production of invented products.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0   INTRODUCTION

The role of education in the development of society cannot be over emphasized. Nigeria has failed with some educational programs,  which have only served as conduits to transfer money to the corrupt political leaders and their cronies for instance, the nation launched the Universal Primary Education (UPE) in 1976, but as noted, the program failed due to lack of fund necessitated by corruption, among other Nigeria has again launched another mass-oriented education program, this time branding if the universal Basic Education (UBE). The then President Olusegun Obasanjo, declared  during the launching of the program in Sokoto that the nation “cannot afford to fail this time around” however, the Federal Government reported that the failing standard of education in Nigeria is caused by “Acute shortage of qualified teachers in the primary school level. It is reputed that about 25 percent of the over 400,000 teachers employed the nation’s primary schools do not possess the teachers Grade II Certificate, even when the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) is the minimum educational requirement one should posses.

1.1BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As the tradition of corruption persists the public tertiary institutions have been left too far away. Some of the loans received from the world bank toward education during the 1990s were used to purchase unnecessary and expensive equipment that could not be properly installed or maintained and many institutions received irrelevant and used books and journals all theses including ubiquitous corruption, have contributed to the decline in quality of instruction in Nigeria’s educational institutions.

1.2STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The focus of the research is to concentrate on the need for Nigeria leaders to pay close attention to the need of the educational sector and treat it as a public health issue, because the socio-political and economic development of a nation and (or her health) is in many ways, determined by the quality and level of educational attainment of the population.

1.3PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

1.4SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

And as a result, the youth would be given the appropriate quality academic training and an environment that would enable them to reach the potential.
